O'Neil joined the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 while he was still in highschool. Her vocal performance impressed the jury, and she was voted into an audition in the 100th place. The performance of O'Neil was highly appreciated by judge. But, O'Neil suffered a significant defeat during her Top 10 as well as the Top 9 final weeks when she was voted for in the bottom 3, bottom 3, and second lowest. It was a shock to the judges and they suggested that people vote for Melissa O'Neil, who was the contestant with the most impressive vocal abilities. O'Neil did not make it to the third place again following numerous outstanding performance. O'Neil, Rex Goudie and Werner presented two incredible performances in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that reports would claim that O'Neil had defeated Goudie and became the third Canadian Idol. She was also the first female and youngest winner in the history of the show. O'Neil immediately received a call from Canadian premier Paul Martin to congratulate her on winning Canadian Idol.
